What lets a contractor quote without a second visit
- Fuel and equipment — oil, propane, natural gas or electric; boiler, furnace, air handler, heat pump, or a mix of them across floors.
- Roughly how old it is, and whether the house has been converted from something else.
- What the thermostat reads against what you set it to, and whether the problem is the whole house or one zone.
- Whether the house is occupied right now. An unoccupied house with no heat in January is a burst-pipe problem rather than a service call, and it gets treated as one.
