HVAC repair in the Hamptons: no cooling, no heat, and everything in between
No heat in a cold snap, or no cooling in a heat wave? Say so in the form and pick "This week": a contractor who works your town calls within one business day. For an empty house in winter, the first job is keeping the inside above 55°F or shutting the water off.
A diagnostic visit runs $75–250 nationally (typically $89–149; after-hours $125–400), and most single-part repairs land between $80 and $1,000: a capacitor $80–400, a condenser fan motor $300–700, a furnace ignitor $100–250. The expensive ones are refrigerant leaks ($250–1,200 small; $1,200–4,000 with a new coil or line set) and compressors ($1,100–4,650 out of warranty). On a central AC past 12–17 years or a heat pump past 10–15, the real question is whether the repair buys years. We put you in touch with one licensed Suffolk County contractor who will say which it is.

What a repair visit covers
The contractor starts with the symptom and works back to the cause: refrigerant pressures and superheat on a cooling call, ignition sequence and flame sensing on a heating call, then the parts that fail most on Long Island equipment. Capacitors and contactors on the outdoor unit, fan and blower motors, the evaporator coil, the control board, the thermostat and its wiring. On boilers it is usually the circulator pump, a zone valve or the ignition. A good technician tells you what failed, why, what it costs to fix, and how old the rest of the system is before you decide.
What repairs cost (2026, national ranges)
| Repair | Installed cost |
|---|---|
| Diagnostic / service call | $75–250 (typically $89–149); after-hours or emergency $125–400 |
| Labor | $85–150 per hour residential; $140–300 emergency, after-hours or weekend |
| Capacitor | $80–400 (about $175–250 typical) |
| Contactor | $200–450 |
| Condenser fan motor | $300–700 |
| Blower motor | $450–900 (standard PSC); $900–2,000 (variable-speed ECM) |
| Control board | $300–1,400 (most homeowners $450–900) |
| Refrigerant leak, found and fixed | $250–1,200 for a small leak; $1,200–4,000 when a coil or line set must be replaced |
| Refrigerant recharge | R-410A $50–80 per lb; R-454B $60–90 per lb; reclaimed R-22 $100–150 per lb |
| Evaporator coil | $500–2,500 if the part is under warranty; $2,500–4,500+ if not |
| Compressor | $600–2,650 with the part under warranty; $1,100–4,650 out of warranty (a typical 3-ton system $1,500–3,400) |
| Furnace ignitor | $100–250 |
| Furnace inducer motor | $400–1,100 |
| Furnace heat exchanger | repair $100–200; replacement $500–1,500 |
| Boiler circulator pump | $300–1,100 (typically $350–800) |
| Boiler zone valve | $100–500 |
These are national figures. One pricing guide notes that metro-area labor, which includes Long Island, tends to sit toward the top of the ranges; we have not found a published Hamptons-specific price list, so read the top of each range as the realistic one here.
Repair or replace
Two numbers decide it: the age of the equipment and the size of the repair. Central AC typically lasts 12–17 years, an air-source heat pump 10–15, a ductless mini-split 15–20, a gas furnace 15–20 and an oil boiler 20–35. A $300 capacitor on a 9-year-old condenser is an easy yes. A $3,000 compressor on a 15-year-old R-410A system is usually money that belongs in a replacement, and a good contractor will say so without being asked. Anything on an R-22 system (pre-2010, roughly) costs 2–5 times what the same repair costs on R-410A, because the refrigerant is reclaimed stock at $100–150 per pound.
The refrigerant situation in 2026
Every new residential AC and heat pump built since January 1, 2025 uses one of the lower-global-warming refrigerants, R-454B or R-32. That has no effect on repairs to an existing R-410A system: servicing and recharging R-410A equipment stays legal indefinitely, and by mid-2026 suppliers describe both R-410A and R-454B as normally stocked, after a 2025 shortage that briefly sent R-454B cylinders to $700–2,000. If a contractor tells you an R-410A system "can no longer be repaired," get a second opinion.
What salt air does to equipment
On the ocean side of every South Fork town, the outdoor unit is the weak point. Salt corrodes the aluminum fins and copper tube of the condenser coil, pits the fan motor housing and shortens the life of contactors and capacitors. The repair pattern on a beachfront house is coil and motor work, earlier than inland, and the fix is partly maintenance: a low-pressure rinse of the coil a few times a year, never a pressure washer, which bends the fins. When the coil finally goes, a corrosion-rated replacement is worth asking for.
Second homes
If the house is empty in winter, a heating failure is a plumbing emergency in waiting. Most homeowner policies expect "reasonable care" to prevent freezing, commonly read as keeping the house at or above 55°F or shutting off and draining the water, and a 2024 New York case turned on exactly that fact pattern. A Wi-Fi temperature alarm costs from about $25 (some cloud services add $5–10 a month) and tells you the heat has failed before the pipes tell you.
Who does the work
Anyone handling refrigerant needs EPA Section 608 certification. Residential contracting in Suffolk County needs the county Home Improvement Contractor license, and the electrical part of an HVAC repair, a new disconnect, a circuit, a panel connection, is licensed separately: a master electrician has to be involved. Every contractor we put you in touch with carries all three where the job needs them, plus liability and workers' compensation insurance.
FAQ
Common questions
How much does HVAC repair cost in the Hamptons?
Expect a $75–250 diagnostic visit (typically $89–149; $125–400 after hours or on a weekend), then the part. National 2026 ranges: capacitor $80–400, contactor $200–450, condenser fan motor $300–700, blower motor $450–2,000, control board $300–1,400, furnace ignitor $100–250, inducer motor $400–1,100, boiler circulator pump $300–1,100. The big-ticket repairs are refrigerant leaks ($250–1,200 for a small one, $1,200–4,000 with a new coil or line set), evaporator coils ($2,500–4,500+ out of warranty) and compressors ($1,100–4,650 out of warranty). Metro-area labor, which includes Long Island, tends to sit at the top of those ranges. On equipment past its typical life (central AC 12–17 years, heat pump 10–15), a major repair is usually money that belongs in a replacement.

Typical lives: central AC 12–17 years, air-source heat pump 10–15, ductless mini-split 15–20, gas furnace 15–20, oil boiler 20–35. Salt air shortens the outdoor half of that. Trade sources from other coastal markets claim an unprotected condenser within sight of the surf can fail in as little as 3–5 years and a unit 1–5 miles inland in 5–8 years without protection; we have not found a Hamptons-specific study, so treat those as warnings rather than measurements. What demonstrably helps: a salt-spray-rated or coated coil (some come at no extra cost on the right model), the unit raised at least 12 inches off grade, and a low-pressure rinse 2–4 times a year. The indoor equipment, boiler, furnace, air handler, lives its normal life.
