FAQ
Are heat pumps a good idea in the Hamptons?
Often, yes, with the numbers done honestly. Winters here are mild for heat-pump purposes: design temperatures are 11.9°F (Westhampton) to 15.7°F (Islip), and a listed cold-climate unit holds capacity at 5°F. The live incentive is PSEG Long Island's Home Comfort Plus rebate, a flat $4,000 at market rate and $5,000–7,500 income-qualified, through December 31, 2026; the federal 25C credit ended for systems placed in service after December 31, 2025. On running cost, at Long Island's 27–28¢ per kWh a heat pump beats oil only when oil is above roughly $3.90 a gallon, which it was for most of the past year ($3.67–6.01). It also cools. Budget $16,000–22,000 before rebates for a ducted conversion in a 2,000 sq ft house.

When the answer is yes
- The house is used year-round or kept heated all winter, so the running-cost advantage over oil has months to accumulate.
- The house needs air conditioning anyway: a heat pump is a central air conditioner that also heats, so the marginal cost over a new AC is far less than the full price.
- The electrical service is 200 amps or can be upgraded ($1,500–4,000 in a straightforward swap; $3,000–6,000 with utility work).
- The ductwork is sound, or the house suits a ductless design.
- The oil tank is old, buried or both, and removing it ($800–3,400 underground) was coming anyway.
When the answer is no, or not yet
- Oil is cheap. Below roughly $3.90 a gallon, at Long Island's 27–28¢ per kWh, an oil boiler at 87% efficiency heats for less than a heat pump at a seasonal COP of 2.5. The Long Island average was $5.42 on July 27, 2026 and ranged $3.67–6.01 over the past year, so the heat pump won most months, by 0–30%, not by half.
- The house has a good boiler with years left. Oil boilers last 20–35 years; replacing a sound one early rarely pays.
- The ducts are undersized or leaky and the budget will not stretch to fixing them. A heat pump moves more air at a lower temperature than a furnace; bad ducts mean cold rooms.
- Nobody will accept the shape of the outdoor unit. On a beachfront lot it needs elevation, a coated coil and a rinse schedule; in a historic district it may need review.
The electricity-price trap
Most online calculators assume electricity at about 14¢ per kWh. Long Island's residential rate is roughly double that. Any savings projection you are shown should state the electric rate it uses; if it does not, ask. The arithmetic with local numbers is in our heat pump guide.
The middle path
A dual-fuel system keeps the existing boiler or furnace as backup for the coldest hours and runs the heat pump the rest of the time. National 2026 quotes for dual-fuel systems run $7,000–16,500 by one source and $8,000–25,000 by another. It avoids the electric-resistance backup that costs about $81 per million Btu at Long Island rates, and it defers the tank decision.
What to ask the contractor
Whether the model is on the NEEP cold-climate list and what its capacity is at 5°F; whether the sizing came from a Manual J load calculation (New York code requires it); whether they are a PSEG Long Island participating contractor for the Home Comfort Plus rebate; which refrigerant the unit uses; what the panel needs; and what the backup heat is on the coldest night.
